In their latest EP entitled ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Ubiquity Machine has once again attempted something novel. Each song in this collection contains five tracks that combine elements of alternative rock and the electronic genre. Their distinct style is maintained while simultaneously offering something new. The duo is recognized for their remarkable story-telling skills and engaging melodies, and in turn, creates an extensive listening experience that is full of surprises achievements, and emotionally charged. The title track of the EP, “Romeo and Juliet”, is an integrated piece bursting with both dogmatic and carefree parts. Rather than simply retelling the age-old love story, the band reconstructs it by adding modern reflections and a teasing narrative, making it more relatable. The voice is smooth, the rhythm is stable, and the emotion is really raw, counterpart the polished vocals perfectly. This rest is appealing and the sort that gets stuck in your mind once you have listened to it.

“Betty and Steve” serves as an anthem for dreamers and brings a rebellious spirit. The piece is overflowing with free-spiritedness and boasts of an obsession beat and layered techniques that are surely never too much. The tone embodies the excitement of youthful, rebellious late-night escapades, ensuring its place within ear-grabbing pieces that need to be played loud. Ubiquity Machine employs irony and self-awareness rather effectively through their song “I Think It’s Funny”. The lyrics are sharp, the production is concise, and the combination between the electronic and rock aspects is beautifully blended. It is remarkably fun, albeit it is quite reflective, and the chorus is so catchy that it is remarkably straining to forget. The beauty of the song is undeniable and every time it plays, one is stricken with the desire to hear every detail once again. The metaphoric change in tone on the EP is felt with “Met a Boy”. The tune is calmer and more nostalgic. While it does possess some sad qualities, the tune also embodies a sense of positivity. The vocals capture the feeling of the moment that is infused with a synth-driven background, which earns tears every time one listens to this track. The worries and delights surrounding new relationships are perfectly encapsulated, making this song one of the most heartfelt tracks in the EP.

The much-anticipated closing of the EP with “Losing Your Mind” is brought about with a plethora of energy. The song is chaotic in the best way possible. It masterfully captures the feelings of frustration, confusion and the extreme struggle to try to remain grounded in a fast-paced world. The end is filled with high energy that leaves a lasting impression. With ‘Romeo and Juliet’, Ubiquity Machine demonstrates once again that they are not musicians only, but storytellers too. Each track is infused with feelings, humour, and astute commentary regarding life and relationships. Their EP demonstrates magnificently their prowess in pushing the boundaries of music while still maintaining an essence of fun. If this is only the first half of their forthcoming album, then we can expect a real treat in the second half.
