“Get Me There to Church” is the first single by Michellar — it’s gentle but insistent, and it tells a very familiar story. The song is about love, love that’s been around for a while, and the point at which two people know they’re ready to take that next step. There’s no drama, no ringing church bells, just honesty and heart, a feeling and the desire to make things last. The words are by Michelle Bond (Michellar), and they have that honest ring of truth — you can hear it in the way she sings, and the way she writes. It’s that moment in a relationship when being just domestic isn’t quite enough. It’s time to make it real, and that means getting to church.

The fact that San Francisco and London and Staffordshire, UK, are places which have had a hand in the birth and finishing touches of this track also makes it feel special. The geography’s got something to do with the subtle flavors in the music, too. It’s the sort of song which has traveled — not that it would have had a problem getting to where it was going, of course. Producer Tobias Wilson brought the song and vision of Michellar together with the help of vocalists Helen Walford and Harrison Black, and the way they joined gave the sound a warm, unforced texture. It’s got an easy charm, and it doesn’t try to shout to be noticed — and that makes it all the better.
It’s a release which feels important — not just to Michellar herself, but to listeners, too. It’s the sort of song which calms and soothes and makes you feel hopeful. You can hear the Miranda Lambert influence (among others) in the music, and the sound is clearly in gratitude to country music and its traditions, but it has that spark of something of its own, too. There’s nothing desperate about this — and this is Michellar at her most likeable. She’s not trying to be anyone other than herself, and that’s the best place to be.
