The Radio Addicts are a spark in motion. “Scroll My Life Away”, the debut single from the youthful indie rockers, proves they may be young, but they’re far from weak, lethargic or lacking impact. It’s a thunderous delivery of grainy guitars, hooky melodies and a wild, fuzzed up sonic assault that sounds refreshingly authentic. Luke’s vocals are antagonistic and fearless, and that combination of defiance with genuine expression works a charm. The track’s subject matter isn’t revolutionary – it’s about losing time wasting away online and clocking that this isn’t healthy, and it’s a sentiment we can all get behind. It’s delivered with a lethal combination of vitriol and irreverence and the whole thing sticks like glue.

The standout point of it all, though, is the urgency and the appetite of the band. Their debut still sounds as polished as bands who’ve been around for a decade longer. “Scroll My Life Away” feels equal parts nostalgic punk rock buzzsaw energy and a more current indie-rock sheen. The band channel elements of Buzzcocks and early Oasis with the verses, but the song as a whole and the huge chorus especially skew a lot more “melodic singalong”. The production doesn’t feel too finessed or clinical, with the recording itself having a gritty energy and immediacy that begs to be played at deafening volumes and in sweaty clubs (it already has). In that way, as well as gathering 5000 streams in the first week, selling out hometown shows in Derby and further afield in Liverpool and Bolton and global radio play, it already has that in its back pocket too. The official music video further cements a sense of community around the band, with appearances from local fans and indie rock royalty Jacob Reddy and Jonny Blade cementing that fan-artist bond even further.
It’s not just “Scroll My Life Away” that the Radio Addicts have shown themselves in force with either. The four young bucks (Luke, 14, Daniel, 14, Vincent, 12, and Jonathan, 11) have been selling out venues, merch, supporting artists they admire and respect (The Lottery Winners), and cultivating an actual fanbase who come out to shows. From festival slots to magazine covers, and even backstage moments with Bruce Springsteen, they’re doing everything right. If the raw, youthful energy and raucous quality of “Scroll My Life Away” is anything to go by, we’re going to be keeping our eyes firmly fixed on the band’s EP this November. Don’t wait for the The Radio Addicts, they won’t wait for you.
